It’s a Party, Period! (Recap)

I couldn’t tell you how long I’ve wanted to plan an event such as this. I personally don’t believe our schools are doing enough to educate our girls on this topic. So I did what Erica always does. Stopped complaining and took matters into her own hands.
So yes! March was nothing short of meaningful, empowering, and celebratory!
We had the incredible opportunity to host our first of many It’s a Party, Period! workshop. An engaging, experience led by nurse Angela Walker designed for girls ages 8–13. I wanted to provide an age-appropriate, safe, and informative introduction to menstruation, and it did exactly that… and more.
Angela has been a registered nurse for over 20 years. In witnessing her gentle chair side manner I knew that she would have been the perfect person to fill our girls with confidence.
From the moment participants walked in, the atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and filled with curiosity. While many of the girls arrived feeling a little shy (which is completely natural), it didn’t take long before the room was filled with questions, laughter, and meaningful conversations.
One of the most eye-opening takeaways from the event was the age range of our participants. While the workshop was designed for ages 8–13, the majority of attendees were actually between 8–9 years old.
This reality aligns with growing research showing that, since COVID-19, children are beginning puberty at younger ages. It reinforced something we strongly believe in:
Education must happen early before misinformation has the chance to take root.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I think by creating a space where girls can learn the truth about their bodies in a supportive and affirming environment, we are helping to build confidence, reduce fear, and normalize an experience that should never feel confusing or shameful.
Participants learned:
- Proper menstrual hygiene practices
- How to use pads and panty liners (with hands-on demonstrations!)
- Physical signs that indicate the onset of puberty
- How to care for their bodies with confidence and dignity
In wanting to support the girls learning beyond the workshop, I made it my business to ensure each participant received a branded workbook, filled with interactive activities and worksheets. This resource was intentionally designed so girls can revisit the information anytime they need a reminder or reassurance.
If you’re like me, then food is a love language that cannot be ignored. So yasss there was food and refreshments, of which made for a relaxed and social environment. I felt like Mrs. Claus because we made thoughtfully curated Flow Kits, which included:
- Pads
- Panty liners
- Hand sanitizer
- And other essential items to help them feel prepared and confident
This is something I’d like to offer at every workshop. So if you are aware of any businesses or organizations that would love to sponsor this initiative please reach out to me.
Parents and guardians were provided with FAQ sheets, equipping them with the knowledge and language to continue these important discussions at home.
Truthfully, my goal is to support not just the child, but the entire family unit.
